A Case of Bilateral Atypical Ulnar Fractures with Bisphosphonate Therapy in a Walking Aided Elderly.

چکیده
Dear Editor, Osteoporosis is a growing problem in our ageing population. With increasing awareness of osteoporosis, it can be diagnosed and treated with first-line drugs such as bisphosphonates. However, there have been increasing reports of atypical fractures resulting from prolonged bisphosphonate therapy. These have largely been described in the subtrochanteric region of the femur1 and found in the upper extremity.2 We report a case of bilateral atypical fractures of the ulna in a patient treated with bisphosphonates for 10 years.

Economic Analysis of Bisphosphonate Use after Distal Radius Fracture for Prevention of Hip Fracture
Background: Osteoporosis is a common condition among the elderly population, and is associated with an increased risk of fracture. One of the most common fragility fractures involve the distal radius, and are associated with risk of subsequent fragility fracture. Early treatment with bisphosphonates has been suggested to decrease the population hip fracture burden. However, there have been no p...
متن کاملTreatment of Atypical Ulnar Fractures Associated with Long-Term Bisphosphonate Therapy for Osteoporosis: Autogenous Bone Graft with Internal Fixation
Long-term bisphosphonate use has been suggested to result in decreased bone remodelling and an increased risk of atypical fractures. Fractures of this nature commonly occur in the femur, and relatively few reports exist to show that they occur in other bones. Among eight previous reports of atypical ulnar fractures associated with bisphosphonate use, one report described nonunion in a patient w...
متن کاملA Case Report of Long-Term Bisphosphonate Therapy and Atypical Stress Fracture of Bilateral Femur
Bisphosphonates are potent inhibitors of bone resorption and considered as a gold standard and are generally recommended as first-line therapy in patients with osteoporosis. Though bisphosphonates are shown to significantly reduce the risk of vertebral, non-vertebral and hip fractures, recent reports suggest a possible correlation between long-term bisphosphonate therapy and the occurrence of i...
متن کاملBilateral atypical insufficiency fractures of the proximal tibia and a unilateral distal femoral fracture associated with long-term intravenous bisphosphonate therapy: a case report
INTRODUCTION Atypical insufficiency fractures of the femur in patients on long-term bisphosphonate therapy have been well described in recent literature. The majority of cases are associated with minimal or no trauma and occur in the subtrochanteric or diaphyseal region. CASE PRESENTATION We describe the case of a 76-year-old British Caucasian woman who presented initially to an emergency dep...
متن کاملBilateral Atypical Femoral Fractures in a Patient with Multiple Myeloma Treated with Intravenous Bisphosphonate Therapy
Bisphosphonates are currently the standard approach to managing bone disease in multiple myeloma. Bisphosphonates have high bone affinity that inhibits osteoclastic activity and additionally reduces the growth factors released from malignant or osteoblastic cells, thereby impairing abnormal bone remodeling which leads to osteolysis. However, patients of multiple myeloma may be at a higher risk ...
